Before joining UNRISD in 2005, Naren worked with various United Nations agencies. He worked as a programme specialist with UNESCO for the Asia Pacific region (based in Bangkok) from 1998-2003. Naren has also worked with the ILO as an economist in Geneva. He is one of the authors of the World Employment Report 2004-05: Productivity, Employment and Poverty.
Naren Prasad holds a doctorate in Economics from the University of Paris (Panthéon-Assas Paris II). He studied comparative development, applied social sciences, and applied mathematics at French universities. He has a keen interest in research in economic development issues facing developing countries. He is an executive member of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA).
