Agricultura y bosque en Guatemala: Estudio de caso en Petén y Sierra de las Minas

Author(s): Ileana Valenzuela de Pisano
Programme Area: Environment, Sustainable Development and Social Change
Project Title: Agricultural Expansion and Tropical Forests
No. of Pages: 260
This book, in Spanish, analyses the relationship between agriculture, modernization and the expansion of agrarian frontier and deforestation in Guatemala, in particular in the Petén and Sierra de las Minas. It shows how these factors are not simply recent phenomena, but need to be understood in historical context. The author looks at how Guatemalan society has been organized and its predominant values and development objectives, particularly during the phase of export-led growth of the last 50 years. There exists in Guatemala a deep socioeconomic and environmental crisis, in which the expansion of unsustainable farming systems and the destruction of tropical forest plays an important role. The traditional model of economic development - based on the modernization of agriculture - has generated economic, technological, political and cultural processes that have resulted in the degradation of both the environment and the livelihoods of much of the population. By way of conclusion the author identifies key elements of a sustainable development strategy.
