Communications and Outreach Consultant - Creative Design, Multimedia, Web and Events

The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) was established in 1963 as an autonomous space within the UN system to conduct policy-relevant, cutting-edge research on social development. Our mission is to produce and communicate knowledge and policy alternatives that contribute to progressive social change, in keeping with the goals of the UN system of reducing poverty and inequality, advancing well-being and rights, and creating more democratic and just societies.

UNRISD is now accepting applications for a Communications and Outreach Consultant to work full-time at the Institute in Geneva.

Under the supervision of the Head of the Communications and Outreach Unit, and in close collaboration others in a small communications team, as well as research colleagues, the consultant will provide essential support for the implementation of UNRISD communications and outreach objectives, products and activities at the institutional and project levels, and their promotion to a range of audiences, including donors, policy makers (at international and national levels), civil society groups and academia.

The successful candidate will combine excellent interpersonal and internal communications skills, and a passion for promoting social development research to a range of external audience groups. S/he will:
  • bring proven skills in creative design for print and digital products; multimedia production, in particular videos and podcasts; event organization; and web and social media that will complement the expertise of other team members;
  • have strong visual, oral and written communication skills, with a proven ability to translate complex analysis and ideas into clear, message-oriented, accessible formats for different platforms and audiences;
  • be a self-starter, able to work well both independently and within a small team; and
  • be responsive, flexible and adaptable, able to multitask and to accommodate multiple demands and changing priorities.

Specific duties

UNRISD fosters a collaborative environment where the consultant will work closely with others in a small communications team, as well as research colleagues. Roles and tasks fall into three main categories: creative design and multimedia production; event organization; and web and social media promotion.

1. Creative design and multimedia production
  • Provide graphic design and creative ideas, and production support, based on UNRISD visual identity and brand guidelines, for digital and print products and publications.
  • Audio record and film UNRISD events in Geneva. Produce audio-video outputs.
  • Produce and/or source photographs for use in UNRISD materials.

2. Event organization and promotion
  • As the focal point for coordination of the UNRISD Seminar Series, identify and liaise with speakers, organize logistics, create publicity (including traditional and social media interest), and produce communications assets (briefs, podcasts and/or videos).
  • Support the organization and promotion of other UNRISD events as required.

3. Web and social media promotion
  • Generate and/or edit content for the UNRISD website, and contribute to regular website updating.
  • With C+O colleagues, engage regularly on UNRISD social media properties (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube)
  • Produce and analyse statistics from the UNRISD website and social media channels. Provide regular updates and strategic advice regarding their use and adaptation.

4. Support other duties of the C+O Unit, including producing the bimonthly eBulletin, ad hoc translation assistance, and working with other colleagues on the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of communication products and activities.

5. Network on behalf of UNRISD / C+O (UNCG Social Media group, Geneva Web Group, etc.)

Requirements and qualifications
  • Creativity and proven design sense for development / research communications appropriate for a range of audiences.
  • Experience with design and layout software, audio and video production/editing, website CMS and analytics. (UNRISD uses Adobe InDesign and Photoshop; Audacity and PowerDirector; and Lotus Notes CMS, Google Analytics and Excel.)
  • Degree in communications, journalism or design, and two years of relevant experience.

Desirable attributes
  • Experience working in international environments and working with global networks.
  • Knowledge of current thinking and practice in development research communications, including both traditional and digital media.
  • Knowledge of the development sector, networks and organizations (including the UN).
  • Working knowledge of French or Spanish (or another UN language).

Terms and conditions
  • This is a full-time appointment located at the Institute at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Remuneration: CHF 4,200 per month, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Duration: six months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of two years (subject to availability of funding).
  • Starting date: November 2014, to be mutually agreed.
  • UNRISD is not responsible for medical insurance, which is mandatory for the period of assignment.
  • UNRISD will cover one return ticket at least costly fare.
