28 May 2009

UNRISD Research Fellow, Imraan Valodia, is scheduled to speak at the Symposium on “Sex, Gender and Politics: Research and Policy Implications Pertaining to South Africa, India and Switzerland”, 29 May 2009.

Valodia will give a speech entitled “Taxation and Gender Equity: A Comparative Analysis of Direct and Indirect Taxes in Developing and Developed Countries”. He will examine the gender biases in direct and indirect taxes in eight countries, including Argentina, Mexico, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa, Morocco, India and the UK, with particular emphasis on South Africa and India. Based on the research findings, Valodia will also make policy recommendations.

Valodia is Visiting Researcher at UNRISD and Senior Research Fellow in the School of Development Studies, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The purpose of the symposium is to examine changes and persistence concerning gender in connection with global transformations processes, and to stimulate debates on the implications of social and political practices in terms of gender justice in South Africa, India and Switzerland.

The symposium, which kicks off Friday at the University of Basel, Switzerland, is part of a four-day event on the relationship between globalization and gender research. The series of events is co-organized by the University of Basel’s Zentrum Gender Studies and Centre of Competence on Africa.
