UNRISD is partnering on an initiative led by the Global Development And Environment Institute (GDAE) at Tufts University to distribute learning materials free of charge to thousands of libraries in 138 countries. The initiative, The Social Science Library: Frontier Thinking in Sustainable Development and Human Well-Being (SSL), is a contribution to the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development. It is providing access to important research-based knowledge and ideas, giving special attention to those institutions that are most in need of library resources.
UNRISD is pleased to be associated with the SSL project, whose objectives resonate closely with our own: to ensure that global debates on inclusive and sustainable futures increasingly include voices from all parts of the world, and to give global attention and emphasis to those social science and environmental writings that are most likely to contribute to understanding and promotion of sustainability and human well-being.
, UNRISD, the WorldWatch Institute
and Horizon International
at Yale University have contributed materials to the SSL. The package contains over 3,400 full-text journal articles, book chapters, reports and working papers in various disciplines, including economics, history, sociology and political science. The material is being used in classrooms and communities, by researchers and government decision makers. As of 25 June 2013, the package had been made available to 1,200 entities across 55 countries.
