Former UNRISD board member Asma Jahangir was elected President of Pakistan’s Supreme Court Association Bar on 2 November.
Jahangir’s election is “a very important step in the reinforcement of constitutionalism and the rule of law in Pakistan”, Louise Arbour, President of the International Crisis Group, said in a press release.
Previously, Jahangir was an advocate to the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and co-chair of South Asians for Human Rights. She was also appointed the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Arbitrary or Summary Executions and served as the United Nations Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief.
Jahangir is the first woman to be elected president of Pakistan’s Supreme Court Association Bar, the country’s most influential forum for lawyers.
Jahangir was an UNRISD Board Member from 2005 to 2009.
