Julia Szalai is Senior Research Fellow at the Center of Policy Studies, Central European University (CPS CEU), and Chief Research Advisor to the Institute of Sociology, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (IS HAS). She is currently the Principal Researcher for the EDUMIGROM research project (“Ethnic Differences in Education and Diverging Prospects for Urban Youth in an Enlarged Europe”). In addition, she teaches under the auspices of CEU’s Political Science Department and Nationalism Studies Program.
Her nomination to the UNRISD Board was approved by ECOSOC in July 2009.
Ms. Szalai's research work embraces studies of post-communist welfare regimes, issues of poverty and ethnicity, the intersection of class, gender and ethnicity in a comparative perspective, and also investigations on struggles of recognition and redistribution. She has taken part in cross-country comparative projects on these topics, provided consultancy for various Hungarian and international bodies, and lectured at a number of universities in Europe and the United States. She is also the author of chapters in a number of edited volumes on issues of poverty, gender, social policy and ethnicity.
