Maria Shagina

Former Intern (Research)

Maria joined UNRISD in January 2017. She assists the Director of UNRISD, Paul Ladd, in administrative and organisational issues, and in conducting desk research.

Prior to joining UNRISD, Maria received a joint PhD degree in Political Science from the University of Lucerne and the University of Zurich. Her dissertation focused on the impact of cooperation between the European party federations and non-EU parties on party development in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, Maria spent a 9-month research visit as a PhD visiting fellow at the Centre for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies, University of Birmingham. In 2012, she was a recipient of the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for her research stay at the University of Bern. Funded by DAAD-OSI, Maria received her M.A. degree in Social Sciences from the University of Dusseldorf.

Maria has a diverse working experience. She worked as a Project Assistant in the EU-funded project at the University of St. Gallen, liaising between the management and academic teams in Germany, Russia, Azerbaijan and Germany. In addition, she worked as an Intern at the State Parliament of North-Rhine Westphalia (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Federal Agency of Civic Education (Bonn, Germany).
