The Senegal country study

  • Project from: 2000 to 2005

The Senegal country study, directed by Momar-Coumba Diop, was carried out between January 2000 and June 2002. It consisted of the following components:

A preparatory phase marked by preparation by Olivier Sagna of an overview paper on information and communications technologies in the history of Senegal, followed by a research planning seminar in Dakar.

Ten research projects, generating new knowledge on the role of information and communications technologies in various sectors of the Senegalese economy and society. The studies and their authors are listed below:

An overview volume, edited by Momar-Coumba Diop and published in 2002 by Karthala/UNRISD, Paris. The book is being translated into English for co-publication with an English-language press.

Two small grants for students writing their masters’ degree theses on subjects related to information technology in Senegal. These students worked with members of the academic team.

A monthly newspaper supplement, containing four pages of analysis, news and views on information technologies in Senegal. This supplement appeared between and in the well-known Dakar daily Sud Quotidien. All ten issues are collected and displayed on the Web site of the Senegalese NGO Osiris.

A public conference, held in Dakar in June 2001, at which preliminary project findings were presented and discussed.

The UNRISD Senegal study was financed by the Ministry of Development Co-operation of The Netherlands.
