Seeds of Plenty, Seeds of Want: Social and Economic Implications of the Green Revolution.

This publication provides an overview of the Institute’s work on the Green Revolution and highlights the polarizing effects of new agricultural technologies and the need for “peasant-based strategies”. It stresses the critical role of existing agrarian institutions in determining the impact of then new agricultural technology on rural people and shows how in situations of sharp social inequality, the introduction of high-yielding varieties tended to marginalize small cultivators and undermine the customary means of livelihood.
