This publication contains case studies in Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia showing factors influencing the evolution of cooperation: poverty, local and national distribution of income and landed property, and so on. The authors conclude that cooperatives would have a better chance of success if peasants were given a say in their management. Organizing cooperatives does not in itself change the pattern and structure of agricultural development.
