Thomas worked with UNRISD in 2006 with Kléber Ghimire in the Civil Society and Social Movements programme on the outline of a new project on youth participation in non-institutional political movements.
He holds a MA in History and Economics from Lausanne University with a thesis on relations between Switzerland and the Bretton Woods Institutions in the 1940s. He also holds a postgraduate degree (DEA) in Development Studies from the Graduate Institute of Development Studies (IUED) at Geneva University. His DEA-thesis questions intellectual property rights on agricultural plants in relation to traditional knowledge in the frame of institutional and ecological economics.
Before his studies at IUED, he worked for several years as a political secretary of the Union of Students in Switzerland (VSS-UNES). Thomas left UNRISD in October 2006.
