Salma Al Darmaki

Former Visiting Fellow

Salma joined UNRISD as a Junior Visiting Research Fellow in June 2017. She conducts research on social development policies in Egypt, Tunisia, and the MENA region. She also contributes to the project “New Directions in Social Policy: Alternatives from and for the Global South” and to the development of new projects in the Social Policy and Development programme.  

Salma is interested in the intersection between social development policies, human rights and the law. Most of her work and research has been in these areas.

Prior to joining UNRISD, she worked with the Abu Dhabi Government Restructuring Committee and the UAE Permanent Mission in Geneva. Salma has also worked as a Parliamentary Researcher for the UAE’s Parliament (Federal National Council), and as a Social Development Expert with the Government of Abu Dhabi. She was part of various social policy projects in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, some of which included the development of different legislation, strategies and the Abu Dhabi Plan 2016 – 2020.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from Zayed University (with honors), a Master’s degree in Human Rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science and is currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in Law with the University of London.
