Henrique Napoleão Alves

Henrique Napoleão Alves holds a Ph.D. in Law from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, a Masters in Law from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and a LL.B. (five-year program with thesis defence) with Honours from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Alves has also completed post-doctoral research at the Ius Gentium Conimbrigae / Human Rights Centre of the University of Coimbra.
Alves’ experience encompasses works in academia and legal practice in Human Rights, Tax Law and Constitutional Law. Alves worked with cases and legal matters in both national and international jurisdictions, as part of the firm Sacha Calmon – Misabel Derzi and, for the past two years, as a Lawyer of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Alves has developed research and teaching activities in different institutions and countries, including the University of Coimbra, Portugal (Postdoctoral Researcher); the University of Texas, United States (Visiting Researcher); the Inter-American Human Rights Institute, Costa Rica (Invited Lecturer); Milton Campos School of Law (Professor), the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Professor & Researcher), the Judicial School of Amapá (Invited Lecturer), Pedro Leopoldo Foundation (Invited Professor) and the Center for Updated Legal Education - FUMEC University (Invited Professor), Brazil.
During his career, Alves was rewarded with different awards and distinctions, including the Ricardo Lobo Torres Prize (Judicial School of the State of Rio de Janeiro); the Sacha Calmon Navarro Coêlho Prize (Abradt – the Brazilian Association of Tax Law); and the Territórios Quilombolas National Prize for his research on human rights and the right of quilombola communities to land (Brazilian Ministry of Agricultural Development, Brazilian Federal Government).
